The existing surface-lot parking for the Science Museum of Virginia (SMV) was at a premium, so the City of Richmond decided to replace the surface lot with a new precast concrete parking garage that would provide increased parking capacity, improve parking quality for visitors to the SMV, and be more user-friendly to the community.
A precast concrete design provided the cost-efficiency, speed of construction, and openness desired by the City of Richmond for the new SMV parking deck. Metromont’s Richmond manufacturing facility produced nearly 101,000 SF of precast concrete for the garage, completing precast assembly in just two months. The four-level deck includes three elevated levels of precast and provides 400 new spaces for visitors to the Science Museum of Virginia. To complement the SMV’s architecture, Metromont utilized an acid-etch finish and form liner that replicated the limestone and classical details of the SMV. The total project was completed in three months, increasing the parking capacity for the SMV sooner than would have been possible with other construction methods.
